Foam Fractionator

Foam Fractionation has been around since about 1890 to separate surface-active compounds from gaseous solutions.

The same principal has been applied to marine culture systems for the last 60 years.
Foam Fractionation is a mechanical device for improving water quality by removing fine organic matter and dissolved organics.

Foam fractionators also provide an easy way to introduce ozone at low dosage rates into culture water , to increase Redox levels and the removal of water colouration (browning of water)

How Does It Work?

Foam fractionation is an efficient, cost-effective way to remove small particles and dissolved organic wastes from water, while at the same time increasing dissolved oxygen levels.

Foam fractionation is mixing air and water together with either air diffusers or venturi air injectors.

As the air bubbles travel upward through the water column, much like a continuous bubble curtain, which 'catch' small organic waste particles on their bubble walls.

These bubbles create foam that is carried upwards and out of the water column and is then collected at the top of the column.

As the foam accumulates it eventually falls out of the column, separating from the water inside the vessel.

Several names have been given to this form of filtration, such as 'Protein Skimming', 'Protein Stripping' or 'Foam Fractionation' but they all operate on the same principal.

Fractionators are also a convenient way to introduce ozone into water.

Product Description

Aqua Systems offer large commercial foam fractionators from 60 - 135cm diameter. And are constructed from GRP, Food Grade PVC and Polyethylene, with flow rates up to 2270 litres/min.

The Units are supplied complete with dual venturi's and a pump to provide the air source. All adjustment valves are also inluded along with a pressure gauge.

The top clear foam collection section is provided with a high-pressure wash down nozzle, to keep it clean. The foam collection / vent outlet is designed to allow collection of foam internally and venting separating ozone to the outside or via an ozone destruct unit.

* Helpful Information *

Important factors that affect the efficiency of a foam fractionator are:
  • Air to water injection method and ratio
  • Contact column dimensions
  • Contact time between the air bubbles and water
  • Maintenance adjustment
Foam fractionation removes proteins and other organics before they are mineralised into nitrogen compounds and other toxins and should be installed BEFORE the biological filtering process takes place, reducing the load on the biological filter.

Air and Ozone

Each fractionator model features a venturi manifold injection assembly that allows the operator to make precise adjustments based upon the pressure, before the venturi air injectors.

Fresh Water

Foam Fractionation can under some circumstances work efficiently in fresh water. The ideal conditions would be with systems containing a high dissolved organic contaminate level. Under these conditions systems can benefit from the continual separation and removal of dissolved organic wastes particularly if used with ozone.
