Hydrotech are the most popular make of filters for removing solids form recirculated aquaculture water.

The Hydrotech Discfilter is a mechanical, self-cleaning filter, especially designed with a view to achieving high performance in systems with high flow rates. The filter works without pressure requirement to force the water through the screen and is robustly designed.  Once separated, the solids are rinsed off into a collection trough from where they can are discharged.

The water flows by gravity into the filter segments from the centre drum. Solids are separated from the water by the microscreen cloth mounted on the two sides of the segments. When the screen is clogged, the back-wash cycle is started and solids are back-washed into the collecting trough. The spray headers for backwash of the discs fold out to facilitate maintenance of the spray nozzles. Each disc consists of eight filter segments. The segments are bolted to the centre drum and are easy to change.
