Chemicals for Recirculation

Chemicals to assist in the starting up and maintenance of healthy biofiltration systems

Ammonium Chloride
Used for dosing recirculation systems when starting up, to provide an ammonia source for the bacteria colonies. Comes in a white powder form which dissolves easily. Average recirculation system start up rates are in the region of 0.7 kg per day per 100m3 system volume. Period of start up may be from 2-8 weeks depending on water quality / temperatures.

Sodium Nitrite
Using Sodium Nitrite in conjunction with ammonia chloride (above) can speed up the filter maturation process if you are in a hurry. It acts by providing a source of nitrite right from the start, rather than waiting for it to be produced as part of the filter maturation process. Average recirculation system start up rates are in the region of 0.2 kg per day per 100m3 system volume for the first 5-10 days.

Sodium Bicarbonate
Used for buffering the water against pH drop. If no buffering is used the pH will gradually fall due of the action of the bacteria in the biofilter. Supplied as a free flowing powder to prevent caking when used in dosing systems.

Calcium Carbonate
Used for buffering the water against pH drop. If no buffering is used the pH will gradually fall due of the action of the bacteria in the biofilter. Supplied as a free flowing powder to prevent caking when used in dosing systems.

Magnaspheres
Used for buffering the water against pH drop. If no buffering is used the pH will gradually fall due of the action of the bacteria in the biofilter. Supplied as small granules which can be used in a fluidised column.
